Residence permit for study purposes

If you have been admitted to a university in Norway, there are certain requirements to be met before a residence permit for studying can be granted. Admission to a university does not automatically guarantee that you will be granted a permit.

Please be aware that the universities are not responsible for students who have entered Norway without a valid residence permit.

Granting a first time residence permit for studying takes 2-6 months, if all the required documents are enclosed and accepted by the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration. Applications must be submitted at the Embassy.

Students are required to document the possession of NOK 85 000 per year to cover living expenses. The amount must be transferred to an account in a Norwegian bank in your own name (Exception: The University of Oslo has opened a special account for such a deposit, you can get more information about this at the Embassy.) Stating that you will find a part time job will not be accepted as documentation for a first time residence permit.

A student residence permit is generally granted for one year at a time and is renewable upon satisfactory full-time study progress.

The following documents are required:

  • Two passport photos
  • Two sets of application form filled in with block letters
  • Two copies of the passport
  • One copy of the ID-card (Shenasname)
  • Confirmation of admission to a University
  • Study plan
  • Finance plan
  • documentation of the transferral of 85 000 NOK to an account in a Norwegian bank

A fee must be paid when applying for a work or residence permit, also for a study permit. The fee is NOK 1100 =
2 000 000 IRR. The fee cannot be paid after applying.

The fee must be paid both by persons applying for a first-time work permit/residence permit, and for those applying for a renewal of such permit.

The following groups are exempted from paying the fee:

  • Children below the age of 18
  • Applications from persons included in the EEA-agreement or EFTA-convention

The fee must be paid in cash to the Embassy. It is not refundable even though the application should be rejected.
