New visa rules for the Schengen area - Community Code on Visas

18/04/2010 // "Community Code on Visas" is the EU regulation that became effective 5 April 2010. It contains rules for the processing of applications and requirements for obtaining a visa and entails that the Schengen countries will pursue the ongoing process towards a joint visa policy.

For visa applicants to Norway, the Community Code on Visas involves the following main changes:

  • The applicant shall present proof of Travel Medical Insurance upon submission of the application. The insurance dates will have to be 15 days longer than the dates you will effectivily stay in the Schengen area, according to the new regulation of a "period of grace" of 15 days. This will allow for a certain room for maneuvre for the visa holder.

  • Regarding validity of the visa: In all cases an additional "period of grace" of 15 days should be included in the period of validity of the visa. However, a maximum stay in the Schengen area on a Schengen visa is always 90 days. So, even though the dates of your visa is for 105 days, you may NEVER stay more than 90 days in the Schengen area. If you overstay, this might result in your next visa application being rejected. We kindly ask you to pay attention to this new regulations of a "period of grace".

  • A visa application should be lodged at least 15 calendar days before the intended visit. If an application is lodged less than 15 days before the intended departure, the Embassy may accept the application, however the applicant risks that the final decision on the application might be taken after the intended date of departure.

  • A visa application cannot be lodged earlier than three months before the start of the intended visit.

  • The deadlines for obtaining an appointment to hand in applications shall as rule not go beyond two weeks.

  • The travel document of the applicant must be valid at least three months after the intended date of departure from the Schengen area. The travel document of the applicant must contain at least two, blank pages.

  • Visa fee for children aged 6-12 years is 35 euro.

  • In principle, the applicant shall present the original and a photocopy of each document with the visa application. The photocopies will be kept at the Embassy and the original documents shall be returned to the applicant. ORiginal translations will not be given back.

  • In the Visa Code Handbook, Annex 14 you can read the non-exhaustive list of supporting documents which the Embassy may request from the applicant. More importantly, here is the list of documents the Royal Norwegian Embassy Tehran asks from persons applying for a Schengen visa to Norway, both in farsi and english.

  • The list of required supporting documents shall be made available to the public. It can then be considered that the presentation of an incomplete file means that the applicant either does not take his application seriously or is unable to present the requested documents and the Embassy should, in principle, take the decision on the basis of the application file, as presented, whether complete or not.

  • As a general rule, decision-making will be made within 15 days after the application has been considered admissible. In cases where further scrutiny is necessary, the deadline may be extended up to 30 days. Please note that for several of the visa cases handled by this Embassy, experience shows that further scrutiny is needed. As the visa officers receiving the application may not inform you about the expected processing time in individual visa cases, you should therefore plan for a possible 30 day case processing time.

  • You may authorise a third party to collect your travel document at the Embassy.
